A Warm, Honest Look at This Plant‑Based Chicken Alternative: Just Chicken Pieces Review (2026)

Just Chicken

Faux chicken. Fake chicken. Alternative chicken. Almost‑real chicken. Whatever anyone wants to call it, plant‑based chicken is here to stay. I’ve tested many faux‑meat options over the years—some impressive, some forgettable—but the plant‑based chicken category is the one that keeps getting better. Today, there’s a vegan chicken alternative for nearly every cut Americans cook with: breast, thigh, wings (still not my thing), chunks, cubes, and shreds.
If you love the look, feel, and chew of shredded chicken, Just Chicken Pieces might be your new favorite. They’re designed to pull apart into moist, convincing “chicken” shreds that work beautifully in bowls, tacos, salads, and saucy dishes.

Faux Meat Evaluation

Visual

Just Chicken Pieces come in a box with frozen chicken strips in a vacuum‑sealed plastic pouch—nothing glamorous, but no different from many frozen chicken strip products.  The pieces look like thick chicken breast strips with a clean, off‑white color that feels familiar and not at all off‑putting.

Tactile

No sliminess. No stickiness. The pieces are flexible, not rubbery, and once cooked they hold together while still showing visible “shreds.” They don’t fall apart, but they’re not stiff either—a good sign for a plant‑based chicken substitute.

Cooking Performance

According to the package:
• Add oil to a non‑stick skillet and preheat to medium‑high
• Add frozen Just Meat and cook 2–3 minutes
• Flip and cook another 2–3 minutes until golden
• Heat thoroughly to 165°F
I followed the instructions exactly. The pieces caramelized beautifully—deep golden brown, no sticking, no tearing. After cooking, I moved them to a cutting board and used the classic two‑fork shredding technique. They pulled apart just like a chicken breast. Honestly, it was a little mind‑bending.

Taste & Texture
The taste and chew were spot on. Truly.
This plant‑based chicken tastes like chicken—clean, mild, familiar. No gumminess, no odd textures, no slimy bite, no minerality, no chemical funk. Straight from the box, without seasoning, it tastes exactly like unseasoned chicken: mild, a little bland, but with a pleasant umami backbone.
And that’s the point. Real chicken without salt or pepper is equally unremarkable. It’s a canvas. This behaves the same way—you immediately start imagining sauces, marinades, wing‑style glazes, or a quick sauté with garlic and herbs.

Wrap‑Up: Is Just Chicken Pieces Worth Buying?

Just Chicken Pieces come in Unseasoned, Sesame Ginger, Buffalo, and Chili Lime varieties. At the time of this review, an 8‑ounce bag ranges from $4.97 to $6.50, depending on the store and sales. For comparison, major‑brand frozen chicken breast averages around 75 cents per ounce, though pricing varies widely based on supply chain and whether you buy organic or conventional.
Availability is excellent: Sprouts, Walmart, Amazon/Whole Foods, H‑E‑B, and other major chains carry it. Their wide distribution likely benefits from the success of their well‑known liquid egg replacement, Just Egg.
If you’re looking for a plant‑based chicken that shreds, browns, and behaves like the real thing, this one earns a spot on the shortlist.
